In the fourth method, first the treatise is quoted. "Action" (karma) means karmavācanā. In stating "compatible", the matter must accord with the Dharma, for it cannot deviate; as for stating "training rules" before and after, it is because the practice of active maintenance is a training decreed by the sage. Below, the text is taken up and explained; first, the Dharma [procedure] is determined in accordance with the matter. The three stages of Dharma [procedure] are: simple motion (jñapti), jñaptidvitīyā karmavācanā, and jñapticaturthā karmavācanā. From "as to" below, the quantity of Dharma [procedures] used is explained. Although extending across four Dharma [procedures], not all need be used; they are merely listed collectively, which is why it says "the stages reach at most four." However, these four stages include both the definite and the indefinite: parivāsa and mūlaparivāsa are practiced according to whether they are applicable, so these two are indefinite; the six nights [of mānatva] and the clearance of offenses (abbhāna), these two are definite. The preceding four antidotes and the subsequent principal repentance all elucidate these stages, which is why it points to them here.
