In the evaluation, the first section has four parts. First, it laments that the repentance ritual is not practiced. Even during the Sui and Tang eras, when the eminent monks were extremely numerous and the Buddhadharma flourished greatly, it was still said to be rare; how much more so in today's Final Age, how can words describe it! The repentance rituals for the six groups [of offenses] have long fallen into neglect. The deeds of wrongdoing by the monastic crowd leave a trail of defilement beyond words; or when approaching the poṣadha, they sit securely in silence, harboring faults all their lives, dying without repentance. Is it not that although the wondrous medicine has been left behind, the poison has penetrated deeply, and they are unwilling to take it? Alas! From "even if" below, second, it reproaches abandoning the prohibitive [teaching] to follow the transformative [teaching], first pointing out the fault. From "I" below, it denounces the error; the upper three phrases reproach their taking and discarding. If one is sincere for the sake of the Way, principle demands that both be practiced together; one should not despise the small and delight in the great. From "only" below, third, it shows the differences in their repentance. From "all" below, it exposes their inner condition: because the prohibitive repentance specifies the marks of offenses committed, bringing humiliation before the assembly—let alone practicing parivāsa, which deprives one of privileges and imposes hard labor—they are ashamed and do not do it; transformative repentance is not like this, so they practice it often. As for "karma knotted by shame", committing karma binds oneself, and one conceals it from others; because one conceals it, offenses accumulate in the mind, and because they accumulate, karma grows even broader; thus the seeds of offenses flourish ever more, so what is the use of repenting in vain? From "this" below, fourth, it concludes by exhorting that one must rely [upon this].
