初能緣心中。現在簡過未，相續簡一念。《疏》云：念念雖謝，不無續起；即以此心，為戒因本。

Under the first, the cognitive mind: "present" distinguishes it from past and future; "continuity" distinguishes it from a single thought-moment. The *Commentary* states: "Although thought-moment after thought-moment ceases, it is not without continuous arising; it is precisely using this mind as the fundamental cause for the precepts."
