四明品數，引論中，初科，上句牒本論。律中者，即指所宗正量部也。解下，疏釋，初示方言不同。即如《僧祇》，《四分》五聚，亦相近也。今下，釋部義，初通標。有下，別示。方便根本，由具二義，則成黨類，故得部名。

Fourth, explaining the number of categories. In citing the treatise: in the first section, the upper line repeats the root treatise. 'In the Vinaya' refers to the school relied upon, the Saṃmatīya. The phrase 'explaining [as follows]' is the commentary's explanation, which first shows the differences in regional languages. Just as in the *Mahāsāṃghika*, the five clusters of the *Dharmaguptaka* are also close to it. The phrase 'now...' explains the meaning of 'cluster' (varga); it first marks it in general. The phrase 'having...' shows it specifically. The preparatory stage and the fundamental [transgression], through possessing the two meanings, constitute a faction and category; hence it obtains the name 'cluster'.
