Under "Non-offenses": first, citing the five notions. All mean that there is no mind of theft. The "notion of being given" means thinking the other gave it; "one's own" means thinking it is not another's property; "rag-heap" means thinking it is ownerless; "taking temporarily" means intending to return it; "intimate friend" means no distinction between oneself and the other. From "The Vinaya…" downward, the fifth is specifically explained. Among the seven dharmas: first, exhausting one's strength to substitute for another's labor without weariness; second, giving one's cherished goods without stinginess; third, when severely opposed and vexed, holding no grudge at all; fourth, pouring out one's private thoughts without hiding anything; fifth, concealing the bad and praising the good, fearing harm to another's reputation; sixth, in imprisonment and misfortune, using various means to rescue them; seventh, in noble or base, poor or rich circumstances, remaining consistent from beginning to end. From "Such…" downward concludes and clarifies. Thus we know that only sincerity qualifies for the exception; any other loose pretexts fall into criminal guilt.
