In the next section, the mark in the *Mahāsāṃghika* is identical, but the conditions are different; it must not be conflated with the preceding. "Great red": that is, using the color of a robe to praise the female path. Because she did not understand the intention, she responded in terms of a robe, hence saying "newly dyed," etc. That the Buddha ordered the bhikṣu to ask was to verify the woman's actual intention. From "the Buddha said..." downward, the judgment of the offense has two distinctions: "meaning" refers to the meaning of the words; "flavor" refers to the intended purport. Only when both are present is it a saṃghāvaśeṣa; this reveals that if the preceding condition has understanding of the meaning but not the flavor, it should logically be reduced to a lighter offense. Therefore, the *Dharmaguptaka* is cited to clarify it; the "meaning of the words" here is the above "meaning and flavor."
