In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: the first section contains six exceptions. First, it permits borrowing the extra robe of a monastic companion and making an additional determination of it; accordingly, one should relinquish one's original robe from afar. "Lacking..." below next permits borrowing a secular item. "Making it pure" refers to marking it to spoil its appearance. "Furthermore..." below thirdly permits running back outside the gate. "Do not scale the city wall to go out" is because in the Western regions, saṅghārāmas were mostly in araṇyas. In the note, it first clarifies the reason why reaching the gate avoids forfeiture; "that..." below points out the sectarian difference. "If there is no..." below fourthly permits having part of one's body enter the boundary. "If there is no" refers to gatehouses that are not connected to the boundary. Dù means a ditch. "Furthermore..." below fifthly permits scaling the wall. "Do not cause suspicion" means one must speak and inform them, letting people know. "If not..." below sixthly permits relinquishing from afar. In the morning one commits the two duṣkṛtas of incompleteness and damage, but does not reach the stage of niḥsargika-pāyattika; hence it says "exchanging the heavy for the light."
