In distinguishing ambiguities: the reason one commits an offense on behalf of another, the Commentary says, is due to flattering intent; if it were directly for another without affectionate fondness, one would not necessarily take the robe. (This means knowing that the other person cannot take in excess, and therefore taking it for him; according to the Precept Commentary, the character qi [beg] is absent, so the present text is a scribal error.) In the non-offense section of the Vinaya: if content, if less than content, if given many robes (meaning an invitation at will), if fine, thin, and not durable, if made of two or three layers, or if there is a remainder as spoken above, all are not offenses.
