In the *Satyasiddhi-śāstra*: there are four karmas of speech. The text above only clarified the separation and combination of three, so it is cited to explain it. Regarding "frivolous speech": ancient worthies explained that it is like the interwoven patterns of brocade in the world. Or it is called "skewed speech" (綺側語): because the words deviate from reason, they are called skewed, and are also called "meaningless speech". Question: If they are not separated, such as at the time of false speech, should two offenses be incurred? Answer: Saying they are not separated does not mean they are simultaneous offenses; it is just that the other three kinds of speech, being crooked and unbeneficial, are subsumed under frivolous speech. Thus, frivolous speech has a shared name with distinct marks. If discussing distinct offenses, the Precept Commentary states: frivolous playing, distraction, and agitation, where faults and transgressions deviate, are all generally minor offenses. Only if done during Saṃgha formal acts does one incur a pāyattika offense, as in frivolous speech of the mouth below.
