In the direct explanation, there are two parts again: first, a general account; the first two lines specifically mention the persons who commit [offenses], according to whether they are in training or not in training. The lower two lines together explain the mental marks. From 'As...' onward, it cites and illustrates. Among the four, the first is the general mark, because it gathers everything; because turbidity and heaviness are difficult to manifest, it is provisionally defined as the superior mind in terms of having no regret throughout the three times. The lower three are specific marks, because they expand on the mind of delusion: the second is the mind of wrong views, the third is the mind of heedlessness, and the fourth is the mind of pride. Therefore, the lower two lines generally indicate the karmic retribution. From 'Because...' onward, the author of the Transactions Manual concludes and demonstrates. Being shameless and without regret are unwholesome, being the minds of beginning and end. They cover the preceding four kinds, each mutually combined with them. Regarding 'from the beginning without' (chu wu): an ancient record says, 'Chu is like dou (entirely)'; although it does not appear in dictionaries, borrowing a gloss to reveal the meaning has been followed since antiquity without obstruction.
