In citing illustrations: first, the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra is cited to prove that karma is heavy according to the mind. In terms of institution, an ant is light and a human is heavy, because the classes and groups are fixed; in terms of karma, an ant is heavy and a human is light, because the mental activities differ. From 'Due to...' onward, the reason is deduced. From 'As...' onward, next the Daśādhyāya-vinaya is cited to further prove that karmic offenses are not eliminated through confession. Tiaoda, in full called Devadatta, here translated as 'Heavenly Heat'; he was the Buddha's cousin and Ānanda's brother. Causing a schism in the saṃgha incurs a sthūlātyaya, which is an offense under the instituted teaching; but the rebellious karma is the heaviest, hence he falls into Avīci for one kalpa. From 'Therefore...' onward, thirdly, a sūtra is cited to further prove that even after confession one falls into hell; it is also called the Sūtra on Karmic Retribution in Hell. Whether karma is determinate or indeterminate is distinguished solely by the presence or absence of the three times; if all three times are complete, it is determinate karma. 'Determinate' has two meanings, as listed in the text; 'indeterminate' also has two, which can be understood by stating the reverse. 'The Buddhas cannot turn it' is because the karmic power of sentient beings surpasses the Buddha's power. Below it points to the end of the fascicle, which is in the 'Chapter on Confession'.
