In the specific explanation, citing the Daśādhyāya-vinaya: first, it clarifies earth-like matter. Because its generative power is weak, all offenses are light. "Collapse" means crumbling down. "Rock base" refers to the ground pressed down by a rock. The character ni (泥, mud) is read in the falling tone, referring to a plastered place. Fearing it might go deep to the ground, sinking past the knees is prohibited, while below that is without offense. From "Except..." onward, it clarifies exceptions due to circumstances. "Making a template" means tracing a mark on the ground. This makes an exception for raw earth; according to the previous note, one must not be too lenient. From "If..." onward, it clarifies that non-earth incurs no offense. Red ochre is red earth (that which does not produce things). White clay is white earth. Native stone is natural rocky ground.
