In the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: first, damaging while doing work. "Turning stones" means flipping them over. "Tamping earth" means pressing and tamping with an implement to make it level. Second, clarifying the size of earth clods above. Third, damaging a wall. "Hammering" should be "nailing." "Damaging what is completed" shows the meaning of the offense. From "If outside..." onward, fourth, clarifying earth that has become raw again. "End of the earth boundary" refers to the extreme limit of the ground where rain does not reach. From "If dismantling..." onward, fifth, taking down and breaking. This refers to stacking on the ground to make a wall, like today's earthen walls. First, regarding when there is mud: having someone remove it first, one may take it down oneself. From "If..." onward, next, regarding when there is no mud but it has been rained upon: having someone remove the damp boundary, one takes down the middle oneself. The character hang (行) is pronounced hu-gang in fanqie (or read in the falling tone, a northern colloquialism). From "Well..." onward, sixth, managing water. A ditch is a channel. "Puddled water" refers to where rain temporarily collects. Shu (抒), pronounced chang-lü in fanqie, means draining water. From "Great..." onward, seventh, scratching and harming, meaning on raw earth. From "If vase..." onward, eighth, moving things. Ninth, sand and earth. Tenth, dead earth.
