次緣開中，《四分》火難，上開壞生。若下，開掘地。土滅者，以土撲也。逆燒，燒字去呼，謂迎前野火也。除即去土，不使旁延。

Next, among exceptions due to circumstances: in the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, in danger of fire, above it permits destroying living [plants]. From "If..." onward, it permits digging the earth. "Extinguishing with earth" means smothering with earth. "Backburning"—burning read in the falling tone—means meeting an oncoming wild fire. Removing means clearing the earth so that it does not spread laterally.
