In the second subsection, it first shows the offense. 'Duly appointed' means one deputed by sangha-karma. In that vinaya, any appointed person is broadly addressed as an 'appointed person', not merely an administrative officer; the Karma Commentary quotes: 'All karmas for appointing persons are four-person acts,' which is this case. Regarding 'one who successively engages another incurring the same offense': because he engaged him personally, he is identical with the principal person; as for 'another person' in the Mahīśāsaka-vinaya, it must mean one not personally engaged, or it is a difference between schools. Under 'Because of...', it cites the causal story. It says: At that time, a fisherman netted a large fish with a hundred heads, each head being different; the World-Honoured One saw it and called its name, whereupon it responded; the Buddha asked, 'Where is your mother?' It replied, 'In the privy;' the Buddha said, 'This fish was a tripiṭaka bhikṣu in the time of Kāśyapa Buddha; because of harsh speech, it received the retribution of diverse heads; its mother loved his gains and offerings, and became a maggot in the privy.' Citing this causal story serves as a profound admonition to later students. Yet worldly lecturers, mounting the Dharma seat in person, frequently vilify one another; please consider the coming retribution—you must be all the more fearful and prudent!
