In judging items, there are three [steps]. First, there are three inquiries: first, inquiring about debts; second, inquiring about entrustments; third, inquiring about common living. One person should be directed to answer concerning their existence or nonexistence. Next, judging light and heavy [items]. As for the division mentioned above, one should indicate the intention regarding heavy and light items one by one before the Saṃgha, and then place them separately in different locations. Third, demanding the items used to send off the funeral. Regarding the threefold proclamation of returning: one should first announce to the Saṃgha that such-and-such number of items were used to send off the deceased, that these belong to the sick-carer, and that since they were substituted into the legal procedure, they must be returned; the proclamation states: 'May the Venerable Saṃgha listen! The Saṃgha now takes this robe and returns it to Bhikṣu So-and-so.' (Spoken three times.) If there were none, it means the deceased's items were not taken to send off the funeral.
