賞勞中，初科，前標合賞。今下，次辨須否，初斥時對問。以答具不具，二皆不便。俗所恥者，《論語．顏子》云：願無伐善。（謂自稱己德。）與下，顯今不須。律云：即引結說戒堂文，故云結不結也。此明賞給由僧，不必須問。

In rewarding labor: in the first section, the preceding marks what ought to be rewarded. From 'Now' onward, it next discriminates whether it is necessary or not. First, it refutes answering inquiries at the time. Because answering whether one possesses [the virtues] or does not possess them are both inconvenient. What is shamed in worldly custom: the Analects (Yanzi) states, 'I wish not to boast of goodness' (meaning praising one's own virtues). From 'Giving' onward, it clarifies that now it is not required. The Vinaya states: it precisely quotes the text on demarcating the hall for reciting the precepts; hence it says 'demarcating or not demarcating.' This clarifies that conferring the reward is up to the Saṃgha; it is not necessary to ask.
