In castigating worldly people: first, recounting indulging one's sentiments and slighting the Dharma. "Rarely one or two" speaks of it being extremely few; if it was already so in those days, how much more so nowadays! If the sacred prohibitions are not practiced, that is the extinction of the Dharma, hence it says "suppressed and broken." "Suppressed" means restrained; "broken" means shattered. From "Lofty talk..." downward, it castigates having words without practice. "Lofty talk" means statements transcending the world. "Hollow discourse" means words exceeding reality. In restraining the mind, in every action one does not act on one's own authority; in according with the teaching, one exclusively upholds the Vinaya's comportment. This clarifies that those who are ambitious: judging by their speech, they transcend the world, but examining their actions, they mingle in the common stream. If a single matter is not practiced thoroughly, then limitless dharmic practices are extinguished in one's person! Those of this sort fill the eyes, which truly chills the heart; if one has truly and sincerely gone forth, may one fortunately not degrade oneself! How could one know ding? Lamenting their foolish delusion. The upper clause refers to delusion regarding the result; the lower clause is creating the cause. From "There is..." downward, it urges them to examine carefully. "Mirror" means to reflect upon.
