In the third, there are eight passages. First, it explains room articles. From 'Bathing...' onward, bathing utensils. From 'All...' onward, prohibiting various mundane articles: the plow is an implement for tilling fields; the harrow is an implement for preparing fields, now commonly called a rake (bái-jià fan-qie). From 'If...' onward, it explains holding a staff. The monk's staff (khakkhara), according to the Vinaya root text, is for startling insects and beasts; according to the Khakkhara Sūtra, it is held and shaken to let people hear while begging for food; their origins differ and need not be reconciled; its name, meaning, and regulations are detailed as in that sūtra. Cracked bamboo making sound is what the world calls a striking staff. Hollowed staffs are like bamboo tubes; in the Vinaya, because non-Buddhists hid a blade inside and informed the king to falsely accuse bhikṣus, the Buddha consequently prohibited them. From 'If the Saṃgha...' onward, it explains fans. 'Rotating axis' refers to making a wheel that rotates, inserting fans around the wheel to blow air. From 'If making...' onward, it explains food preparation utensils. The Vinaya root text uniformly writes 斂; according to character dictionaries, it should properly be 匳 or 籢, a flat-bottomed vessel; the character 斂 originally had a rising tone, so I suspect the Vinaya text dropped the bamboo radical. Dǎng is pronounced dǎng, which is a short bucket. 𠨬 should properly be 巵 (pronounced zhī), meaning a wine vessel. Bǐ means spoon. From 'If eating...' onward, it explains the bathhouse. From 'If dwelling...' onward, it explains adorning rooms with incense.
