In the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, the beginning raises present suffering for comparison. The text lists six items; namely, outside of the four requisites, paying homage and providing service are added. In the Vinaya, the Buddha first questioned the bhikṣus, saying: "Would you rather truly take hot iron as clothing to burn and rot the body away, or wear the clothing of men and women of faith?" The bhikṣus answered: "We would rather wear the clothing of men and women of faith." The Buddha rebuked them: "You foolish men, it is better to take hot iron as clothing to burn and rot the body away! Why is that? Because one does not fall into the three evil destinies on account of this!" The other five are all like this; the present text summarizes and abbreviates them, so it first distinguishes the items of affairs and later generally indicates the reason. The text from "If" onwards explains the signs of cause and effect in falsely receiving [offerings] contrary to the Dharma. Having no true virtue within the mind, it says "empty within"; displaying dignified deportment in the body, it says "manifesting without." The text from "This" onwards exhorts practice; the first three lines exhort using them according to the Dharma. The lower four lines explain benefit to oneself and others.
