In the next section, it first cites the text. Bowing to a person and hanging a banner are neither of them evil deeds, yet one is still admonished against slighting and disrespecting; this is truly because, facing the sage, there is nothing more venerable, hence it says 'the locus of reverence is distinct'. 'Stepping' (*dao*) means trampling with the feet. From 'since' onward expresses the admonition, first encouraging caution. From 'arriving' onward shows the method. Treading on water and approaching the deep are metaphors for fear and trembling. (The *Classic of Poetry* says: 'Apprehensive and careful, as if approaching a deep abyss, as if treading on thin ice'; here it is borrowed and applied.) From 'this' onward shows the benefit: the upper line corrects others, and the lower line moves the sages. From 'moreover' onward raises a comparison. Magistrates (*lingzhang*) are the bureaucratic officials of commanderies and counties. From 'in all' onward urges compliance. 'Entrust' (*ren*) means believe.
