In specifically rebuking, it first points out the error. A low couch (*xiachuang*) is a short couch. In modern times, foolish followers mostly practice this corrupt custom; if those with discernment happen to hear of it, they should fortunately reform. From 'this' onward directly rebukes. The Patriarchal Master once traveled to Jin and Wei and personally witnessed this matter: on a couch, he offered bow and salutation to a monk, but the monk rebuked him instead; hence it says 'respecting people' and so forth. 'Pattern' refers to the Vinaya rules. From 'I' onward cites personal tradition to verify it: since it is not the method of the Western regions, it is evident that it is an irregular practice of this land. From 'moreover' onward cites clear texts to corroborate it: in that sūtra, there are three [situations where] one should not bow: first, one is already in an elevated place while the elder is below; second, the elder is in front while oneself is behind; third, oneself is sitting on a seat, so one should not bow to one below the seat; now the text cites them continuously, comparing them with the *Sūtra*.
