Next, in the cited demonstration, the first passage previously recounts what accords with the Dharma. "Disparagement" refers to mockery and blame; "involvement" refers to entanglements, namely being close to a nunnery, marketplace, and the like. "Scripture workshop" refers to the present scripture repository. "Nowadays..." below next explains what is contrary to the Dharma. "Only having the location" means merely building halls and dwellings. Yet karmavācanā for delimiting boundaries was sometimes performed, hence it says "there are also." Saying "outside the limits" means either outside the halls and dwellings or outside the monastery. "Therefore..." below cites and demonstrates. "Trees, stones, and the like": planting trees symbolizes growth; erecting stones symbolizes firmness and constancy; the ordination platform situated in the east symbolizes the meaning of germination; the impermanence cloister in the west symbolizes that demise is not long off; erecting the stūpa finial symbolizes that the confused know where to return; multi-storied pavilions symbolize the graduated steps of the factors of awakening; being moistened by ponds symbolizes that māras and non-Buddhists cleanse their minds; planting lotuses symbolizes that practitioners' minds are pure; the rest are as stated there, and those in need should consult it. (The *Illustrated Scripture*: recently brought from Japan, the text is in two fascicles, which was composed by the Patriarchal Master.) "Overshadowing heterodox arts" means causing māras and non-Buddhists to have no awe-inspiring power—"shadowing" is like shutting out; "birds and beasts fear its majesty" means causing other kinds [of creatures] not to dare encroach. "Forms and deportment being veiled yet evident" means the arrangement of images is worthy of behold; "revered and looked up to by the world" means the gentry and commoners give rise to goodness. (The old commentary's erroneous explanation is not adopted now.)
