The next section explains the ignorance and darkness of laypeople; the text recounts the original donors, but the principle applies to other people as well. "Destruction and decay" concerns material goods; "injury and humiliation" concerns the Saṃgha. "Serving" means reverent service. The large characters in this section all cite *Edicts on Monasteries*, hence notes are used to aid them. "Begging and requesting" means demanding. Look, I pray, at these matters: even at that time it was like this, so what is there to wonder at today! Furthermore, there are drinking banquets in the halls, slaughter in the Saṃgha kitchens, storing miscellaneous items, accumulating grain reserves, or usurping them as government offices, or organizing them as commercial depots; marriages, childbirth, and miscellaneous defilements beyond description. This is due to the lack of talent among the Saṃgha community, how could it be solely the ignorance of worldly literati? I constantly lament the ruin of the Dharma-gate, with no one to uphold it; and further grieve over the hardship of hell retribution, with no one to rescue and heal. If one truly harbors deep insight, how could one not reflect on this again? One must know that disaster and fortune have no fixed gate—they are summoned only by human beings; those who have the strength and ability to deliver should transmit this and exert themselves.
