3.723

三中。勞字去呼，慰也。以至施家，無宜默住；當先慰問，令生喜勇。家中是人口，生活即事業。餘更隨機，故云等也。然道貴省語，不宜多涉，隨以時緣引接而已；其或巧言令色，妄取顏情。折腰低首，意圖後請。豈唯屈道，抑亦滅法；重道護法，必不行之。

In the third [heading], the character '勞' is pronounced in the falling tone, meaning comforting. Upon arriving at the donor's house, remaining silent is unsuitable; one should first offer comforts to cause them to feel joyful and inspired. 'Household' refers to family members; 'livelihood' refers to their occupations. Other matters are adapted to the circumstances, hence the word 'etc.' However, the monastic path values sparing words; one should not involve oneself too much, but merely receive them according to timely conditions. If one employs clever words and flattering looks to curry favor falsely, bowing low and stooping one's head with the intention of securing future invitations, not only does this debase the monastic path, it also destroys the Dharma. Those who revere the monastic path and protect the Dharma must never do this.
