In the fifth [part], the Mahāsāṃghika first teaches guarding the hands. In that country, they eat by balling food with the hands; in this land, cakes and fruits are also mostly taken by hand. From "beverages" downwards, next it teaches guarding vessels. "Beverage vessels" refers to those for drinking hot water and cold water. "Pouring from the spout" refers to shared use by multiple people; wishing to pass it to a junior seat, one therefore rinses it clean. From "on the food" downwards, third, it clarifies alerting the assembly. The Dharmaguptaka first clarifies those who do not get food. This means that if food was missed when served, one must not seek it oneself, for that loses great magnanimity. From "if there is" downwards, next it clarifies clearing and gathering fallen items. The Vinaya teaches taking the bowl when eating.
