Under "Purpose of Coming": In the first section, the first four lines broadly indicate it. Shadows follow the arising of forms, and echoes emanate due to sounds; form and shadow, sound and echo, cannot be separated from one another, so the metaphor is taken from them. The difference in forms is easily understood; as for the "difference in dharmas," it is explained either in terms of precepts, or in terms of the two divisions of merit and wisdom; or it may be that the rules laid down in worldly and world-transcending teachings are different. "The same destination" means that the monastic Way cultivates the cause of liberation, while the laity forms the karmic connection for liberation; their practices differ in slowness and speed, but their seeking of liberation is not different; or it may be that taking refuge together in the Triratna and jointly propagating the correct transformation constitutes the destination, which accords quite well with the text below. From "therefore" downwards, extensive explanation: first it explains mutual reliance; the first four lines clarify that the monastic Way relies on the support of the laity. "Adhere" means to draw close and adhere to. The latter two lines clarify that the laity requires the aid of the monastic Way. From "therefore" downwards, next it explains the destination. The first line is the Buddha Jewel; the lower two lines are the Dharma and Saṃgha Jewels; the single phrase "abiding and upholding" runs through both above and below. "The demise of the saṃgha disciples" means that when the practice of the saṃgha's ancestral tradition is deficient, it is already demise.
