九中，初科。《母論》撮要，同前《四分》；此委引本緣，以彰開意。十二部者：一契經，二重頌，三授記，四諷誦，五無問自說，六因緣，七譬喻，八本事，九本生，十方廣，十一未曾有，十二論義。三藏教法，不出十二類，亦名十二分教。撰，音選。要言，謂合機堪用；妙辭，即顯白易解。

In the ninth part, the first subheading. The Mātṛkā's summary is the same as the previous Dharmaguptaka-vinaya; here it cites the original circumstances in detail to reveal the intention of granting the exception. As for the twelve divisions: 1. sūtra, 2. geya, 3. vyākaraṇa, 4. gāthā, 5. udāna, 6. nidāna, 7. avadāna, 8. itivṛttaka, 9. jātaka, 10. vaipulya, 11. adbhutadharma, 12. upadeśa. The teachings of the Tripiṭaka do not go beyond these twelve classes, which are also called the twelve divisions of the teaching. The character zhuan is pronounced xuan (to select). "Essential words" means suitable to the faculties and worthy of use; "wondrous expressions" means clear, manifest, and easy to understand.
