Under 'Reciting Sūtras': The narrative of the parrots comes from the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish. It states: There were two parrots in Sudatta's household that could understand human speech. Ānanda went to their house and taught them the teaching of the Four Noble Truths. Having heard it, they joyfully recited and practiced it, flying into the trees, ascending and descending in succession through seven rounds. That evening, while roosting in the trees, they were eaten by a wild cat and were immediately reborn in the Heaven of the Four Heavenly Kings. Ānanda heard of this and asked the Buddha about the place of their rebirth. The Buddha told Ānanda: 'Because you taught them the Dharma, after their lives ended they were first reborn in the Heaven of the Four Heavenly Kings with a lifespan of five hundred years; second, they were reborn in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven with a lifespan of one thousand years; third, they were reborn in the Yāma Heaven with a lifespan of two thousand years; fourth, they were reborn in the Tuṣita Heaven with a lifespan of four thousand years; fifth, they were reborn in the Nirmāṇarati Heaven with a lifespan of eight thousand years; sixth, they were reborn in the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven with a lifespan of sixteen thousand years; seventh, they were reborn back in the fifth heaven, and in succession returned down to the Heaven of the Four Heavenly Kings, ascending and descending seven times. When their celestial lifespans ended, they were born down in Jambudvīpa, where among humans they went forth to study the path. Because of the previous Four Noble Truths, their minds spontaneously opened in comprehension, and they became pratyekabuddhas.' Therefore it says, 'later attained the traces of the path.' The 'Larger Version' refers to the Prajñā[pāramitā Sūtra]; the 'Chapter on Passing through the Ear' comes from fascicle thirty. It states: 'Śakra Devānām Indra thought: If someone hears the name of the Prajñāpāramitā once pass through their ear, this person in previous lives has performed all manner of merits in the presence of buddhas and associated with good spiritual friends; how much more so if they accept, uphold, read, and recite it.' Regarding the two characters 'eternally abiding' (changzhu), the six-fascicle Nirvāṇa Sūtra states: 'Good sons and good daughters should uphold the two characters "eternally abiding" of the Tathāgata and cultivate and practice them through kalpas; such sentient beings before long will attain the path of equal and right awakening.' Both sūtras clarify supreme retributions; therefore it says, 'will not be born into evil destinies.'
