Next, within the confession rite, the petition first divides into two: first citing the treatise to explain. The petition, the formal request, and the confrontation-confession apply to all three grades; receiving the confession by a single jñapti is restricted to the upper grade. From 'Now' onward, next explaining the presentation of the petition also has three parts: first, explaining the assembling of the Saṅgha. The master of confession makes the motion to receive the confession, and because he is being assessed by the Saṅgha, he does not count toward the Saṅgha's quorum; therefore, five or more persons are required. Next, explaining the preparation of the protocol. From 'First' onward, within the third part, directly presenting the petition's phrasing: this is stated provisionally based on not remembering; if one remembers, one must state the number. Under the second: a pure bhikṣu must be determined on the basis of himself lacking the three grounds, having an understanding that penetrates the Vinaya-piṭaka, and giving rise to faith and reverence in oneself—only then may one request him. Under the third: in the response formula, saying 'grave offense' is a textual error; the character 'offense' should be below the character 'impediment'. Under the fourth: pointing to before and after refers to saṅghāvaśeṣa beforehand and within pāyattika afterward. Under the fifth: abbreviating the remaining phrasing means continuing: 'If one confesses, there is peace and comfort; if one does not confess, there is no peace and comfort. I remember my offenses and disclose them; knowing them, I dare not conceal them. May the Venerable One remember me as pure, endowed with the body of precepts, and pure for the poṣadha.' Under the sixth: following what comes later, it may also be formulated as 'You should reproach your own mind'; both are acceptable in meaning. The seventh is named 'making the vow'. Because one wishes to connect the response formula with what precedes it, the designation of the number is placed below.
