The next subsection has two parts: first, it cites three meanings from the treatise. The first is the general meaning, because it applies generally to all [precepts]. The second, to stop slander, is explained in the treatise: 'Worldly people and non-Buddhists would say that the renunciant sons of the Śākya practice impure deeds, no different from laypeople.' The third, to produce faith, is stated in the treatise: 'Although it be in a secluded place, all the heavenly beings and good spirits see it.' From 'fourth' downward, it next cites the words of rebuke from the Vinaya to reveal conversely the intention behind the prohibition: to make practice pure so that one is worthy of receiving donations. The texts of the four Vinayas are identical, manifesting how pressing their intention is. Even if not for the purpose of emission, touching the genitals with the hand is exceedingly base and vile. It often occurs in the world. Please use these words to reprove yourself; could you be without shame?
