In explaining the first condition, within the Dharmaguptaka[-vinaya], the first section: 'Relying' takes the sense of attaching oneself and leaning on [someone]. The [types of] reliance are four distinct ones, but what is corrupted is no different. As for the third type, one merely causes them to rely on one's influence with an intention involving private bias; it does not necessarily mean giving goods. That all four are termed 'corruption' is because none fail to destroy the other's pure faith and cause them to harbor partiality. Nowadays, monks are never steeped in the Way; their greedy seeking knows no satisfaction; they plot and solicit followers; their giving of favors has no proper timing, only hoping for invitations to dine; giving little and getting much, they are like those in the marketplace. Both subject and object fall; how can they hope to generate merit? Nothing exceeds this in sheer ruin and destruction. True sons of the household-leaving: take care never to practice this!
