Eighty-second, the precept on picking up precious objects. 'Precious objects' refers to the seven treasures. 'Precious ornamental articles' includes even tin or pewter as ornaments; picking them up all constitutes an offence. The fifth fascicle of the Sarvāstivāda-śāstra states: 'Possessing precious objects is subsumed under the thirty precepts [of niḥsargika-prāyaścittika]. If one picks up another's precious objects, or precious objects one has oneself made allowable by declaration (vikalpana), merely picking them up incurs a prāyaścittika, which is subsumed under the ninety matters.' According to this, a straightforward prāyaścittika is the limit of the offence. The view of earlier commentators that it refers to picking up lost precious objects is too narrow. 'Except in a saṅghārāma': if someone drops and leaves it behind in a saṅghārāma, and if it is not gathered up one fears bhikṣus will be slandered, it is therefore permitted to collect it. According to the Mahāsāṃghika[-vinaya], fascicle eighteen, during a great assembly offerings of gold and silver to stūpas and statues are picked up by a temple attendant (kalpikāra); thus we know one must first employ a temple attendant to collect them. If there is no temple attendant, only then may a bhikṣu collect them with his own hand. 'And at a lodging place': when a bhikṣu is travelling and happens to lodge at another's house, if there are precious objects in the other's house with no one guarding them, fearing that their loss would incur slander, collecting them is permitted as above. The text stating 'if a bhikṣu in a saṅghārāma' onward elaborates the preceding exception clause. 'Having made such a cause and condition and not otherwise' means that acting with the intention to collect it falls within the permitted scope, and not otherwise with an intention to rashly pick it up without a cause.
