Eighty-third, the precept on entering a village at an improper time. 'Improper time' is from afternoon until the appearance of dawn. This precept prescribes announcing one's departure, fearing that people might wander idly and enter villages without purpose; stating the matter to another shows it is not without cause. According to the vinaya, when announcing, one must inform a co-resident, saying: 'Venerable One! Today at an improper time I am going to the house of so-and-so in such-and-such lane of such-and-such ward; please bear it well in mind. If you need to seek me, please know my location.' This constitutes a proper entrustment, and it is not strictly necessary to perform full formal etiquette or display reverence. If the route merely passes through a village, or if one is invited, summoned, and so forth, there is no offence. It is unlike the Mahāsāṃghika[-vinaya], where one enters only after informing one another by passing the word along the outskirts of the village.
