Third is the abbreviated [prātimokṣa] of Viśvabhū Buddha. The people of that Buddha's era mostly only upheld precepts without seeking superior advancement, and further took pleasure in speaking of others' faults and harboring jealousy. To counteract that, he therefore instituted the precept, saying, "Neither slander nor envy," which is to abandon the two faults of speech and mind. "One should faithfully practice the precepts" is to make the precepts complete. From "Food and drink" onward, following the generation of superior wholesome qualities, the text has five phrases: 1. knowing moderation in food and drink; 2. constantly taking pleasure in seclusion; 3. relying on this to calm the mind; 4. diligently applying oneself to cultivation; 5. concluding and fulfilling the Buddha's teaching. The rest of the text can be understood.
