《毘婆沙》云：「佛語阿難：『我滅度後有五種法令法久住：一、毘尼者是汝大師；二、下至五人持律在世；三、若有中國十人、邊地五人如法受戒；四、乃至二十人出罪；五、以律師持律故，佛法住世五千年。』」

The *Vibhāṣā* says: "The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'After my parinirvāṇa, there are five things that will cause the Dharma to abide long: first, the vinaya is your great teacher; second, at minimum, five persons who uphold the vinaya remain in the world; third, if in the Central Region ten persons, and in borderlands five persons, receive the precepts in accordance with the Dharma; fourth, up to twenty persons grant āvarjana; fifth, because vinaya masters uphold the vinaya, the Buddhadharma will abide in the world for five thousand years.'"
