爾時世尊告諸比丘：「汝等諦聽，善思念之！若比丘說相似文句，遮法毘尼，此比丘令多人不得利益，作諸苦業，以滅正法；若比丘隨順文句，不違法毘尼，如此比丘利益多人，不令作眾苦業，正法久住。是故諸比丘，汝等當隨順文句，勿令增減、違法毘尼，當如是學。」佛說如是，諸比丘聞，歡喜信樂受持。

At that time the World-Honoured One addressed the bhikṣus: "Listen carefully and reflect well upon it! If a bhikṣu speaks using pseudo-phrasings that hinder the Dharma and Vinaya, this bhikṣu causes many people to fail to obtain benefit, to generate all kinds of painful karma, and thereby destroys the true Dharma. If a bhikṣu follows the correct phrasings without contravening the Dharma and Vinaya, such a bhikṣu benefits many people, keeps them from generating all kinds of painful karma, and causes the true Dharma to abide long. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should follow the correct phrasings, not allowing additions or omissions or contravening the Dharma and Vinaya. You should train in this way." The Buddha having spoken thus, the bhikṣus heard it, rejoiced, faithfully accepted, and upheld it.
