3.118

爾時佛告諸比丘：「如來出世，見眾過失，故以一義為諸聲聞結戒：攝取於僧。以此一義故，如來為諸聲聞結戒。」佛說如是，諸比丘聞，歡喜信樂受持。乃至正法久住，句句亦如是。

At that time the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: "When the Tathāgata appears in the world, seeing the faults of the multitude, he establishes precepts for the śrāvakas for one purpose: for the acceptance and protection of the saṃgha. For this one purpose, the Tathāgata establishes precepts for the śrāvakas." The Buddha having spoken thus, the bhikṣus heard it, rejoiced, faithfully accepted, and upheld it. Up to 'that the true Dharma may abide long,' each and every phrase is likewise spoken.
