爾時世尊告諸比丘：「汝等諦聽，善思念之！若比丘說相似文句，遮法毘尼，此比丘令多人不得利益，作諸苦業，以滅正法；若比丘隨順文句，不違法毘尼，如此比丘利益多人，不令作眾苦業，正法久住。是故諸比丘，汝等當隨順文句，勿令增減、違法毘尼，當如是學。」佛說如是，諸比丘聞，歡喜信樂受持。

At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed the bhikṣus: "Listen carefully and consider this well! If a bhikṣu speaks with counterfeit phrasing and obscures the Dharma and vinaya, this bhikṣu causes many people to forfeit benefit, brings about painful karmic acts, and causes the true Dharma to be extinguished. If a bhikṣu accords with the correct phrasing and does not contravene the Dharma and vinaya, such a bhikṣu benefits many people, prevents them from creating painful karmic acts, and causes the true Dharma to abide long. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should accord with the correct phrasing, not adding to or subtracting from it or contravening the Dharma and vinaya; thus should you train." The Buddha spoke thus, and the bhikṣus, hearing it, rejoiced, faithfully accepted it, and put it into practice.
