At that time the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: "Breaking the precepts leads to rebirth in two destinies: among the hells and among the animals. Upholding the precepts leads to rebirth in two destinies: birth among devas and among humans. Committing evil deeds in secret leads to rebirth falling into two destinies: the hells and the animals. Creating good karma in secret leads to attaining rebirth in two destinies: birth among devas and among humans. Wrong view leads to rebirth in two destinies: the hells and the animals. Right view leads to rebirth in two destinies: birth among devas and among humans; the noble disciples of the Buddha are honoured and noble among devas and humans. There are two conditions under which one does not attain liberation: first, committing an offense against the precepts; second, not seeing the offense. There are two conditions under which one naturally attains liberation: first, not committing an offense; second, seeing the offense. There are two conditions under which one does not attain liberation: first, committing an offense yet not seeing the guilt; second, seeing the offense yet failing to repent according to the Dharma. There are two conditions under which one naturally attains liberation: first, seeing the guilt of the offense; second, having committed an offense, being able to repent according to the Dharma. There are two conditions under which one does not attain liberation: first, seeing the guilt yet failing to repent according to the Dharma; second, if one repents according to the Dharma, the other party not accepting it. There are two conditions under which one naturally attains liberation: first, seeing the guilt and being able to repent according to the Dharma; second, when one repents according to the Dharma, the other party being able to accept it according to the Dharma. Bound and unbound are likewise. There are two kinds of purity: first, not committing an offense; second, repenting." The Buddha having spoken thus, the bhikṣus heard it, rejoiced, faithfully accepted, and upheld it.
