At that time the Buddha addressed the monks: "Breaking the precepts causes one to fall into two destinies: among the hells and animals. Keeping the precepts causes one to be born in two destinies: among gods and humans. Performing evil deeds in private causes one to be born falling into two destinies: the hells and animals. Performing good deeds in private causes one to be born in two destinies: among gods and humans. Wrong view causes one to be born in two destinies: the hells and animals. Right view causes one to be born in two destinies: among gods and humans; the noble disciples of the Buddha are revered among gods and humans. There are two things by which one does not attain liberation: first, violating the precepts; second, not acknowledging the violation. There are two things by which one naturally attains liberation: first, not violating them; second, acknowledging the violation. There are two things by which one does not attain liberation: first, violating them yet not seeing the offence; second, seeing the violation yet not confessing it according to the Dharma. There are two things by which one naturally attains liberation: first, seeing the offensive violation; second, violating yet being able to confess according to the Dharma. There are two things by which one does not attain liberation: first, seeing the offence yet not confessing according to the Dharma; second, if one confesses according to the Dharma yet the other does not accept it. There are two things by which one naturally attains liberation: first, seeing the offence and being able to confess according to the Dharma; second, when one confesses according to the Dharma, the other is able to accept it according to the Dharma. Bound and unbound are also like this. There are two kinds of purity: first, not violating; second, confessing." The Buddha having spoken thus, the monks heard it and joyfully received and upheld it in faith.
