爾時佛告諸比丘：「譬如有驢與群牛共行，自言：『我亦是牛！我亦是牛！』而驢毛不似牛，脚不似牛，音聲亦不似牛，而與牛共行，自言是牛。如是有癡人隨逐如法比丘，自言是比丘。此癡人無有增戒、增心、增慧如善比丘，與眾僧共行，自言：『我是比丘！』是故汝等當勤修習增戒學、增心、增慧學。」佛說如是，諸比丘聞，歡喜信樂受持。

At that time, the Buddha told the bhikṣus: "It is just like a donkey walking along with a herd of cattle, saying of itself: 'I am also a cow! I am also a cow!' Yet the donkey's hair does not resemble a cow's, its legs do not resemble a cow's, and its braying also does not resemble a cow's, and still it walks along with the cattle, saying of itself that it is a cow. In the same way, there is a foolish person who follows after the bhikṣus who are in accord with the Dharma, claiming to be a bhikṣu. This foolish person lacks higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom like a good bhikṣu, yet walks along with the saṃgha, saying of himself: 'I am a bhikṣu!' Therefore, you should diligently cultivate the higher training in morality, the higher training in mind, and the higher training in wisdom." The Buddha spoke thus, and having heard it, the bhikṣus rejoiced, received it with faith and delight, and upheld it.
