3.93

爾時佛告諸比丘：「如來出世，見眾過失，故以一義為諸聲聞結戒：攝取於僧。以此一義故，如來為諸聲聞結戒。」佛說如是，諸比丘聞，歡喜信樂受持。乃至正法久住，句句亦如是。

At that time, the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: "When the Tathāgata appears in the world and sees the faults of the multitude, for one purpose he lays down the precepts for the śrāvakas: for the gathering of the saṃgha. For this single purpose, the Tathāgata lays down the precepts for the śrāvakas." The Buddha spoke thus, and the bhikṣus, hearing it, rejoiced, faithfully accepted it, and put it into practice. And so forth up to causing the true Dharma to abide long, every phrase is likewise.
