Twelfth, the precept against trading: it is established because seeking profit harms living beings and contravenes compassion. The Great and Small [Vehicles] commit the offense alike; the seven assemblies do not entirely share it. Trading refers to [trafficking in] slaves or the six domestic animals, or trading in freeborn people, which mostly entails the suffering of separation of kin. In trading coffins, an evil mind hopes for sales, so it is severed for both monastics and laypeople. If one does it oneself, or instructs another to do it for oneself, or instructs another to do it for themselves, in all cases one commits a minor defilement infraction. If one steals and traffics in human beings, sells animals so they will be slaughtered, or uses curses to make people die in order to sell coffins, these separately commit offenses of theft and murder.
