Sixteenth: The precept against preaching upside-down for the sake of gain. It is instituted because it contradicts the way of instructing and teaching. All seven assemblies share in the transgression; it is instituted commonly for both the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna. The previous precept concealed the Great and displayed the Small; this precept, although one preaches the Great, entails that desiring gain and grasping tightly, one conceals the flavor of the meaning and does not allow it to be revealed. When a śrāvaka instructs others, concealing the meaning and principles incurs a minor defilement infraction. The narration of matters has three stages: first, one must first study oneself; second, one must preach fully for later comers; third, explaining that one should not conceal it for the sake of gain. This is easily seen from the text. A certain master says: The ascetic practices listed here are prescribed to cause one to save beings; otherwise it is a minor defilement. Another explanation is: These are words of bringing up what is extreme to illustrate [the lesser]. A mahāsattva should renounce his body and give it to others, and thereafter preach the Dharma fully for them; how much less now, merely preaching the Dharma, should he desire gain and conceal it? The latter stage shows three [points], the textual aspects of which are easily seen.
