Thirty-fourth: the precept against temporarily dwelling on the Hīnayāna, instituted because it runs contrary to what was originally practiced. All seven assemblies equally commit an offense. Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna do not share it, because their practices are distinct. If one wishes to turn away from the Great and head toward the Small, but the mental scheme is not yet finalized, one commits the previous eighth precept against turning away from the Great and heading toward the Small; once the scheme is finalized, one loses the precepts, as explained under the tenth major precept. What is prohibited by this precept is not the desire to turn away from the Great, but merely saying that the Hīnayāna is easy to practice and wishing temporarily to sever fetters and transform beings afterward. The narrative of events has two parts: First, what should be done: one should be mindful of the Mahāyāna. It briefly cites three matters: first, protecting the Mahāyāna precepts. In all, two similes are given: first, the vajra, taking the sense of firmness. The "floating bladder" is as in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra; the "bound by grass" comes from the Nidāna-sūtra. Second, generating faith in the Mahāyāna. Third, giving rise to the Mahāyāna mind. From "If one gives rise to..." onward is the second, what should not be done: one should not give rise to thoughts of self-deliverance even for a single moment. "Non-Buddhists" points to the two vehicles as non-Buddhists. If one provisionally enters this path to transform beings, it is not what is prohibited.
