Thirty-fifth: the precept against failing to make vows. A bodhisattva should constantly make vows to seek superior matters, focusing the mind on wholesome realms so that in the future they will be accomplished through this. If one does not make vows, the mind seeking goodness will be difficult to fulfill, hence it was instituted. It is the same for the seven assemblies. Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna differ, because what they practice is not the same. The narrative of events has three levels: first, revealing the substance of the vows; second, what should be done; third, what should not be done. First, the substance of the vows has ten matters: first, vowing to be filial to parents, teachers, and the Sangha; second, vowing to obtain good teachers; third, vowing to obtain superior companions and fellow students; fourth, vowing that they will teach me the Mahāyāna sūtras and vinaya; fifth, vowing to understand the ten orientations; sixth, vowing to understand the ten nourishments; seventh, vowing to understand the ten vajras; eighth, vowing to understand the ten stages; ninth, vowing to practice according to the Dharma; tenth, vowing to resolutely uphold the Buddha's precepts. From "Rather abandon..." onward is the second, what should be done: one should give rise to this mind. From "If all..." onward is the third, what should not be done: one should not fail to give rise to this mind.
