Forty-third, the precept against receiving offerings without shame: Having committed an offense appropriate to one's station and incurred guilt, to accept gains and offerings recklessly without reflecting with shame and remorse: established because of the absence of shame. It applies to all five monastic assemblies. It is prescribed in both the Great and Small, because of unworthily serving as a field of merit. As the text says, "Those who renounced household life through faithful conviction yet breach the true precepts": householders do not bear the responsibility of being a field [of merit], and are not yet bound. The account of the matter has three layers: First, carrying guilt without shame, one must not receive offerings. Kings originally gave land and water to provide for virtuous persons; those devoid of virtuous conduct should not use them. From "Five thousand" below, second, carrying guilt without shame, one is denounced by humans and ghosts. "If one breaches the true precepts": third, citing the transgression and concluding the offense.
