3.34

Seventh, regarding the retribution incurred for the offense: As in the sūtras, there are three: First, the Alcohol River Hell, which is the offense of wine-brewers; second, the Alcohol Pool Hell, which is the offense of wine-sellers; third, the Mouth-Pouring Hell, which is the offense of alcohol-drinkers. Furthermore, the fourth chapter of the Shilun jing assesses this offense. A verse says: 'The offense of ten oil-press mills / Equals that of one brothel; / Set aside ten brothels, / They equal the offense of one tavern. / Set aside the offense of ten taverns, / It equals that of one slaughterhouse; / Set aside ten slaughterhouses, / The offense equals that of one king or ruler.'
