The passage from “If a bodhisattva should speak thus” onward is the second text within the major section of resolving doubts. Within it there are three sections: the first is a doubt regarding the previous fundamental thesis, which doubts: “If there is no bodhisattva, then a Buddha also does not become a great bodhisattva, sentient beings also do not enter nirvāṇa, and there is also no pure buddha-land. If so, for what purpose do bodhisattvas arouse the aspiration wanting to cause sentient beings to enter nirvāṇa, and generate the mind to practice and purify buddha-lands?” That is, this passage below and the text on adorning and purifying buddha-lands are it. As for the section of sūtra text beginning with “If a bodhisattva should speak thus,” the two treatises explain it differently: Bodhisattva Vasubandhu, in order to jointly resolve a single doubt, carries it far into the subsequent text, whereas the treatise master Asaṅga, when entering the path of realization, reveals leaving conceit, and therefore combines it into the preceding section; neither of them is in conflict. The second and third doubts will be recounted below.
